For over 35 years Domaine de Garenaud has been producing wine. Grapes grown include Mauzac, Chardonnay, Merlot, Chenin Blanc and various others, including dessert grapes. The main wine produced is Blanquette de Limoux. The oldest sparkling wine in the world. It was in 1531, about 150 years before the Champagne region first produced its sparkling wine, that the monks of St. Hilaire (which is nearby) discovered natural sparkling wine. Dom Perignon was a monk at St Hilaire in the 17th Century, learnt the trade and later moved to the Champagne region. The rest, as they say, is history! It is only right that those living on a winery should have the chance to sample its produce. All residents of Domaine de Garenaud will receive a couple of cases of wine each year for their first 5 years in residence. |
